Abstract

In our previous work, we proposed a two-step procedure by using an infinite slab spectral geometry to capture the strong core/reflector spectral interaction in the pebble bed reactor core analysis and we demonstrated the validity of the two-step procedure against a homogeneous PBMR-400 problem. On the other hand, we also proposed Equivalent Cylinder Fuel Model (ECM) to transform the doubly heterogeneous spherical pebbles into equivalent singly heterogeneous cylindrical fuels by combining it with Reactivity-Equivalent Physical Transformation (RPT). In this paper, we demonstrate the validity of the two-step procedure combined with the ECM and the RPT method against a doubly heterogeneous PBMR-400 benchmark problem. We presente two-step diffusion solutions to the problem as well as Monte Carlo (MC) reference solutions at temperatures of 300K and 1200K with a Body Centered Cubic (BCC) packing and random packing of the pebbles in the core region. Results showed an excellent agreement between the two-step diffusion solutions and the MC reference solutions.
