Abstract

ASTM Committee C-16 on thermal insulation in intended to contribute to the sustainability by reducing building and process energy consumption and by improving the quality of the indoor environment. Selection of the optimal amount of insulation for any building or process application requires accurate information about the performance of insulation systems with regard to thermal, structural, durability, and moisture parameters. Committee C16 provide standards that allows system designers to select insulation materials that will provide the necessary performance over a range of environmental conditions. Committee C16 contributes energy conservation by providing material specifications for each insulation product type, and standard test methods. ASTM is also working to harmonize the thermal insulation standards with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Standards Council of Canada to increase the usefulness of C16 standards to code bodies.
