Abstract

Grain boundary phases that form after sensitization treatment in 5XXX series aluminum alloys are a significant concern when the alloys are exposed in a marine environment. For that reason, modification of grain boundary phases and their analysis is an essential step to improve intergranular corrosion. Thus, proper TEM sample preparation techniques need to be selected for grain boundary phase characterization so as to not damage nor dissolve them. FIB milling in conjunction with phosphoric surface etching is introduced presently.
