Abstract

The design aspects of a wireless service in a campus environment which provides 64 kbps voice data transmission and 128 kbps-384 kbps data transmission are presented. Different wireless standards, Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT), Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and cdma2000, are compared and found that cdma2000 is the most appropriate for the wireless service. A wireless service based on cdma2000 is developed for the IIT Delhi campus. The fixed parameters for the design problem are peak and average traffic, the number of users of the service and the coverage requirements. The design parameters include location of cell-sites, cell geometry, the minimum number of base stations, antenna type and the transmit power.
