Abstract

Shipments of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level radio¬active waste have a history of more than 50 years, during which tens of thousands of tons of material have been transported in tens of thousands of shipments worldwide. The vast majority of these have been completed without incident. This safety record has been made possible by establishing robust regulatory requirements for the casks used in transport, study¬ing past shipments and incidents, and improving equipment and procedures to lessen the probability and impacts of future events. Researchers have collected a wide array of publicly avail¬able information on transportation incidents involving SNF and HLW worldwide.
