Abstract
Energy reduction serves as an essential part of demand-side solutions to address the challenges of energy security and carbon emission, and ensure a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system. In this paper, a behind-the-meter transactive market is proposed for the home energy management system to achieve energy reduction by coordinating home appliances through market bidding and clearing. The proposed approach can achieve the optimal coordination by taking into account the home owner's preferences of energy reduction over different appliances. Thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) including air conditioner and water heater are considered as the example to illustrate the controller design. The proposed controllers for TCLs can translate the trade-off between energy saving and temperature discomfort into the bidding information. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed behind-the-meter transactive design for energy reduction.

Funding
PNNL is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy by Battelle Memorial Institute under Contract DE-AC05-76RL01830. This work was supported under Connected Home Program at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Office. This work is supported by the U.S. DOE Building Technologies Office under Connected Home Program. We have already developed a prototype of the proposed transactive HEMS, and are currently working with utility companies to validate it via field trials. Two or three field trials will be conducted to test device installation and set-up, validate savings, and gather home user feedback. These field trials will guide the further improvement of the proposed transactive HEMS.
