Abstract
Standard and emerging atomic spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques for criminal and nuclear forensic analyses are presented with general figures of merit for each technique. The use of multielement and isotopic fingerprinting for determining associations between samples and characterizing sample origin and history is addressed along with factors influencing measurement uncertainty. Examples of elemental and isotopic analysis are presented for glass, bullet lead, and nuclear material forensics.
