Abstract

Surface structure of PbTiO3 was studied using in situ x-ray scattering measurements and equilibrium surface structure was observed in vapor phase under defined cation stoichiometry. The samples were grown in an organometallic vapor phase epitaxy system on SrTiO3 substrates. Samples were maintained at high temperature and flowing tetraethyl lead for in situ x-ray characterization. Results indicated the presence of a single layer of an antiferrodistortive structure in the atomic structure of the c(2×2) phase with oxygen cages counter-rotated by 10° about the titanium ions.
