Abstract

This work describes the development of a new equation of state for liquid Pb83Li17 for use in RELAP5-3D, MELCOR for Fusion, or other applications. The new equation is defined by a standard form of the Helmholtz free energy with five terms (four polynomial and one exponential), which we show is a generalization of the previous soft sphere equation of state used for Pb83Li17. The new equation was simultaneously fitted to available literature data for the density, specific heat, and sound speed of Pb83Li17, and vapor pressure data for pure Pb. The result is an equation of state that describes all these data to a high degree of accuracy, and a significant improvement over the previous equation of state used to generate Pb83Li17 property tables for RELAP5-3D and MELCOR for Fusion.
