Abstract

This paper presents a novel directional protection scheme to address the unique challenges associated with protection during unbalanced faults in a distribution system with high penetration of inverter-based resources. The scheme is based on a superimposed negative sequence admittance method. A coordination approach using a unique inverse-time undervoltage element is also presented. An analysis of the scheme, the detection criteria and the coordination method are performed. Also the impact of inverter-control on the scheme is discussed.
