Abstract

This chapter reports on the development of rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries. The possible concept of a rechargeable aluminum/aluminum-ion battery based on a low-cost, earth-abundant Al anode, ionic liquid EMImCl:AlCl3 (1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloroaluminate) electrolytes, and an MnO2 cathode has been proposed. The Al anode has been reported to show good reversibility in acidic EMImCl:AlCl3 melts. However, due to the problems in demonstrating the reversibility in cathodes, alternate battery cathodes and battery concepts have also been discussed.
