Abstract
With its ample available land and reliable rainfall, the Piedmont is a promising region for energy crop production in pursuit of the ambitious U.S. bioenergy and decarbonization goals. However, this unique agricultural landscape also presents challenges, including small, irregular fields on rolling terrain and limited farm capital, which prevents the use of the high-capacity baling equipment commonly used in other parts of the country.

Funding
In response to this challenge, a novel multi-bale handling unit was developed as part of a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Bioenergy Technologies Office (DOE BETO). This handling unit, called a rack, holds 20 round bales, each measuring 5\u00D74 feet. Within the rack, the bales are organized into four compartments, each holding five bales. To load the rack, a telehandler places five bales in each of the two bottom compartments and then places another ten bales in the two top compartments.
