title = "Actinide and lanthanide separation studies for spent fuel processing",
abstract = "The group separation of the actinide and lanthanide series elements continues to be an area of interest in the processing of spent reactor fuels. The object of this separation is to produce a segregated minor actinide fraction for further transmutation or storage and a fission product fraction for disposal as waste. The more recent work on this separation scheme has centered on the dithiophosphinic acids and the bis-triazinyl-pyridines. A project was initiated to synthesize these reagents and test the extraction and separation of the actinide and lanthanide elements using an actinide and fission product fraction from the chemical processing of highly irradiated plutonium targets. A bis(chlorophenyl)dithiophosphinic acid and a 2,6-bis(5,6-di-n-propyl-1,2,4- triazin-3-yl)pyridine were synthesized, and the extraction and separation properties were determined in batch extraction tests. The distribution coefficients and separation factors for americium and europium are reported.",
