Abstract

The absolute cross sections for the near-threshold electron-impact excitation of the dipole-allowed transitions 3s2 1S→3s3p 1P in Cl5+ and 3s 2S→3p 2P in Cl6+ were measured experimentally. The merged electron-ion beams energy-loss (MEIBEL) technique was used for the purpose. The results showed that the total cross sections exhibited resonance structures near the threshold. Excellent agreement with theoretical results was obtained with respect to the shape and magnitude of the transitions.
