Abstract

Light fragment ions formed in electron-impact dissociation of molecular ions were analyzed. A crossed electron-ion beams configuration was used to measure the absolute dissociation cross section for formation of hydrogen ions. Ions were produced in a commercial hot-cathode discharge ion source. A three-dimensional trajectory modeling program was used to optimize the capability of the ion optical system. It was observed that the cross sections for obtaining hydrogen ions were independent of the number of hydrogen atoms in the target ion.
