Muon Collider/Neutrino Factory Funding

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

A proof-of-principal experiment (MERIT) was performed at CERN in Nov 2007 which successfully demonstrated the feasilbilty ofusing a free-stream Hg jet as a target in a Neutrino Factory or Muon Collider. The experimental equipment, which included an ORNL-developed Hg Jet System and a MIT-developed 15T magnet, was removed from the experimental area in February 2008 and was stored at CERN for approximately 18 months for radiation cool-down. The mercury system has been shipped from CERN to ORNL, where it will be partially dismantled to a level which allows internal inspection, and a decision will be made regarding its future use or disposal. In addition, some effort will be provided towards furthering the conceptual development of a Neutrino Factory target facility.
