Description
The LandScan Mosaic Annual Global Ambient Population Time Series provides annual high-resolution global ambient population estimates from 1975 to 2024. Version 1.0 is distributed as one Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF per year on a globally aligned 3 arc-second WGS84 grid. The 2024 layer represents the LandScan Mosaic benchmark reference year, while the 1975–2023 layers are historical annual estimates generated using the LandCast backcasting framework. The dataset is designed as the initial release of a continuing annual LandScan Mosaic temporal series, with future versions expected to extend the record forward as new LandScan Mosaic benchmark years become available.
Version 1.0 was generated by anchoring the time series to the 2024 LandScan Mosaic ambient population surface and estimating earlier annual population distributions using the LandCast backcasting framework. Historical surfaces were informed by built-environment change and adjusted through control-total recovery to maintain consistency with national and/or administrative population totals through time. All annual outputs are provided on a consistent global 3 arc-second WGS84 pixel-is-area grid to support temporal analysis, spatial comparison, and integration with other gridded geospatial datasets.
